Why Hiring a Quality Toronto Renovation Contractor Always Pays Off

A Toronto renovation contractor’s honest take on why quality craftsmanship and proper licensing matter more than the lowest price.

I started in the general contracting business at fourteen years old, sweeping out newly built subdivision homes after school. The builder I worked for never cut corners. Every wall, every joint, every pipe was done right the first time — and that detail stuck with me long before I understood why it mattered.

That same year, a poster hung in my high school wood shop with a line I’ve never forgotten: Quality is like buying oats. If you want nice, clean, fresh oats, you must pay a fair price. If you’re satisfied with oats that have already been through the horse, that comes a little cheaper. No name was attached to it, but the lesson followed me into every renovation project I’ve taken on since.

It’s why one of the first questions I ask a homeowner is simple: what’s your budget? If the answer comes back as “I just want the lowest price,” I tell them honestly that we’re not the right contractor for the job. Not because we don’t want the work, but because a price that low almost never reflects what proper renovation work actually costs — in licensed trades, in materials, in insurance, and in doing things to code.

A Basement Renovation That Proved the Point

A few years ago, we took on a basement renovation in an older home near the Weston Road and Rogers Road area of Toronto. Partway through the project, we opened up the basement floor and found something that stopped the whole crew in its tracks.

A previous homeowner had attempted his own repair on the home’s main drain — the pipe responsible for carrying all waste water out to the municipal sewer system. Instead of calling a licensed plumber, he’d wedged two pieces of wood around the broken section and held the whole thing together with zip ties.

What’s almost unbelievable is that this makeshift fix actually held for years before we uncovered it. It worked, technically, right up until it didn’t — and a failure on a main drain line is not the kind of problem any homeowner wants discovering on its own.

What This Means for Your Next Renovation

Stories like this are exactly why hiring a qualified, insured, and licensed contractor isn’t a luxury — it’s protection. A reputable contractor carries WSIB coverage, pulls the proper permits, and understands building code requirements that aren’t obvious to someone working without training. The upfront cost might be higher than a handyman special, but it’s the difference between a repair that lasts and one that’s quietly waiting to fail behind your walls.

At Total Reno & Design, we’ve spent more than 25 years serving Toronto and the GTA with that same philosophy: do the work right, even when it costs more upfront, because the alternative always costs more in the end. Whether it’s a basement renovation, a kitchen, a bathroom, or a full home transformation, every project is backed by licensed tradespeople, proper permitting, and a 10-year warranty on all craftsmanship.

So, before your next renovation, ask yourself the same question I ask every client: Are you looking for quality, or are you just looking to pay the lowest price? Because in renovation, just like in oats, you really do get what you pay for.
